Award winning and acclaimed ceramic artist Sandy Kreyer has been making pottery since 1963 from her Long Beach, California studio.
Sandy studied ceramics at California State University Long Beach and though skilled in other media, has focused on pottery, using techniques and materials she developed.
Her subject matter, always flowers, originates from memory and imagination. Sandy loves what she does, and is the only person to work on the entire process, beginning with a lump of clay and ending in the beautiful pieces displayed throughout this site.
Sandy Kreyer is the sole creator of her pottery. Starting with a ball of white stoneware/porcelain clay, she throws each piece on the potter's wheel. The clay that is used is premixed, and especially formulated for functional pottery.
The pieces are allowed to dry after throwing. At this time, items such as teapots and coffee cups are assembled. After the pots are dry, they are loaded into the kiln for a bisque firing. The purpose of this firing is to remove chemicals & water from the clay and to enable the clay to absorb the glaze.
The next step is dipping each piece of pottery into a white base glaze that Sandy has created to work with her specially formulated ceramic color stains. After dipping the piece, she puts it on a banding wheel to apply her designs with the ceramic stains.
After each piece is painted, the pieces are loaded into the kiln for a glaze firing. This firing can take up to eight hours and reaches a temperature of 2250 degrees F. The kiln is allowed to cool, then the finished pieces are unloaded.
